Reverie is a community of students who make creative projects for the joy of it. We come from all backgrounds: engineering students who draw stickers; soon-to-be teachers who make movies; and future nurses who dance.

We just wrapped up our first year as an official York University club. With only a few team members, we hosted 9 events and started a budding community.

This year, we want to make Reverie the most magical club at York! To do so, we will:

  • šŸ„ Produce whimsical, high-quality events where people make friends & make memories.
  • šŸ˜Ž Build a physical community space for club members to hang out in.
  • šŸŽØ Adorn everything Reverie with beautiful art & visual design.

But we can’t do it alone. What if you became a Club Executive? You could:

  • 🄳 Organize shenanigans seen nowhere else on campus
  • 🫧 Work with teammates who put a lot of love into building community
  • šŸ’— See people make friends because of what you do

Read further to see the roles available, learn about team culture, and peek at projects we’ll work on šŸ‘€ As always, don’t hesitate to email hi@reverie.diy or DM @reverie.diy on Instagram if you have any questions!

Applications are due August 31 at 11:59PM EDT. (Get a reminder on Google Calendar or Apple Calendar.)

APPLY NOW ļ¼¼(^o^)ļ¼

Warmly,
Mutammim
President & Co-Founder

Apply for as many roles as you’d like! The roles are meant to categorize different ways to support the team; if you join the team, we’ll decide on your specific responsibilities together :)

We’re aiming to hire one of each role, but there’s no set amount. And remember: any amount of experience is valid; we care much more about your passion! :D

RoleWhat you’ll doProjects to pay attention to
ArtistProduce original artwork, displayed online & IRL, for Reverie’s branding, marketing, events, and other initiatives. You could draw for ads seen by hundreds, (renter-safely) illustrate the walls of the club room, and produce Reverie plushies!
Visual DesignerDesign a meaningful ā€œbrandā€ identity. Create graphics, beyond just templates, for our website, social media, and prints. Coordinate with Artists and Photographers. You could redesign our brand, make pretty social media posts, and craft a printed menu for a tea party.
PhotographerAcross our events (and behind the scenes), take pictures you can’t help but smile at (because they’re too adorable).Anything visual, anything marketing. Your photos are essential to communicating what Reverie feels like!
Interior DesignerDecorate our club room and event spaces. Build small-scale physical structures for marketing. Thrift and DIY components. (Experience in any hands-on skill, like crochet, ceramics, origami, or woodworking is helpful!)Assemble a Clubs Fair booth that feels like a cute shop. Make our event spaces feel more immersive than a classroom.
Content CreatorProduce meaningful, wholesome videos for Reverie, primarily for Instagram, such as vlogs, reflections, and Q&As. Connect with your digital audience.Experiment with video ideas (read more) and turn our Instagram into a cozy corner of the internet.
Event CoordinatorDesign events where people make memories & new friends. Turn your designs into reality, by wrangling logistics (with extra hands as needed!) Experiment with event types, like outdoor events & tabling events.Field trips, PowerPoint Nights, campfires: we have some whimsical events in mind; bring ideas of your own as well!

If none of these quite fit you, consider submitting an application anyways; you could be the person we never knew we needed!

Our exact plans will evolve based on team decisions; this is just a list of projects we would love to see.

I think it’s so cool when clubs have vibey, beautiful, hand-made art and design! No pressure to be award-worthy, we just put a lot of love into visuals.

Jennifer drew our logo, banner, and stickers!

Logo featuring the word "reverie" and a hand-drawn unicorn looking towards the top-left of a purple sky.

Wide banner featuring the word "reverie" in the middle, and cartoon unicorns in the corners (clockwise, from the top-left: filmmaker, magician, astronomer, writer).

This year, you could:

  • Redesign our brand, seen IRL & online
  • Create merchandise, like stickers, hats, and charms
  • Draw custom art for event announcements
  • Take photos & videos that feel Reverie
  • Craft decorations that add depth to our spaces

Some works that inspire us:

What is a community without its people? By telling more people about Reverie, you make events more fun and unlock a lot more event ideas that can only happen with enough interested people.

For one, we want to increase engagement on our Instagram from people who vibe with what we do! We’ll do this through posting more content and interacting with our audience. Our focus is less on trendy skits (though they are funny) or raw virality, and more on meaningful videos that show what makes Reverie special :) For example (click links for inspo):

Like a cozy Instagram page that also happens to be a club!

We also communicate via Discord and email, so you have multiple formats to experiment with.

We’ll also experiment with more IRL marketing! When walking through Vari Hall or Central Square, you’ve likely seen clubs ā€œtablingā€: usually, sitting behind a folding table adorned with club branding. We’ve done this too, but it’s not the most intriguing or approachable. What if we hosted tabling pop-ups that were cool experiences, relevant to our vibe? Say… artist Alley-styled booths, or distributing free kazoos, or spreading miniature ducks, or cozy painting inside a giant cloud?

Finally, we need more money to enable our biggest dreams (e.g. the club room). We’ll produce videos that show potential donors what’s happening in Reverie and where we could go with a little more support.

It’s what we’re here for! We host events where we make things & learn things, for the fun of it, together. Some ideas of ours (bring your own, too!):

MakeathonParticipants from any discipline (e.g. art, writing, music, creative code) draft out something creative based on a prompt (such as ā€œsummertimeā€).
Multipassionate MixerLife is fun having multiple passions (like math AND dance); let’s meet more people who feel the same way!
Multiplayer Art GamesDrawing is cool, but even better with fun twists, like broken telephone, exquisite corpse, and other art games.
Photo WalkWe walk around our pretty campus and snap photos!
Bring Your Favourite Wikipedia Article to School DayWe place our favourites around the room. We talk about them. And we eat Wikipedia-themed snacks.
PowerPoint NightEveryone gets 5 minutes to share a passion of theirs, using silly slides! Big success last year. It’s fun to hear about others’ passions, and it’s a cool way to get to know each other. Potential themes include: funny stories, childhood objects, or even reading mystery slides šŸ™€
Reading LoungeWe bring our books, sit somewhere cozy, and read alongside each other!
Studio & Factory ToursWonder how cool things get made? Let’s go behind the scenes at sticker factories, movie studios, and everywhere in between.
Campfire & Recess GamesUnwind and have fun :)

Maybe even some longer series, like:

Sticker MakersI love stickers, especially laptop stickers. So vibey! What if artists from our community (regardless of sticker experience) came together to draw stickers, pick up tips & tricks, and over a few weeks, make a sticker sheet together? Printed by a sponsor.
Studio Ghibli EnjoyersWe hosted a Movie Night for Look Back, an introspective anime, and had a great time watching, drinking tea, and discussing afterwards :) We could extend this format to all major Ghibli films, there’s so much to talk about.

When designing any event, we aim to:

  • Make them inclusive and approachable, which often entails shared activities (not just putting people in a room!)
  • Think through every stage of the event, from the first announcement to the last goodbye, and how we can make it enjoyable
  • Create chances for folks to form friendships through repeated, low-stakes interactions

Before April exams, we’d like to bring together our community (and beyond) for one extra memorable night: a Showcase & Story Night. Students will share their creative projects (made outside of school) and the stories behind them, on stage. Off stage, we’ll have more projects to view, more activities to drop in to, and many wonderful faces to celebrate the end of a great year with.

Picture this: it’s a packed day for you & your friends, but since you have an hour between classes, you drop by our club room. You snack on a granola bar, listen to someone play a ukulele, and talk to a new friend about The Odyssey. A Club Executive walks in and shares some handy feedback on your art. Your friend stops by with donuts, and you all riff on about life and travel and news and someone’s rock-climbing obsession. Before long, you’re heading back to classes, feeling socially nourished without having to make plans.

When people see each other more often and more casually, and not just at formal events, they form more and deeper relationships :) To keep things practical, we’ll start gathering in our club room (plain, but spacious) as-is, and gradually thrift furniture & DIY decorations to make it much more cozy.

Some cute inspiration:

Ultimately, everything we do is for one goal: creating a community of curious, creative, and passionate students :D This requires consistent care. That means saying hello to new faces, making introductions between members, and paying honest attention to if our events & initiatives really support our north star.

Care: We put a lot of care into Reverie. Everything’s way more fun this way :) Likewise, you’ll get to learn from teammates who are passionate about their specialties, be it in art, events, etc. That said, we don’t take ourselves too seriously. This is just a club. If a project flops, we try again, because it’s about the journey more than the destination.

Not a real Peanuts panel, but I like the quote.

Balance: We balance club commitments with academic ones and avoid putting Reverie work above our personal wellbeing. (If we feel too stretched, we host fewer events.) If you ever need more time for yourself, don’t hesitate to let us know. Do try to communicate in advance so we can make new plans.

Hours: You can expect to invest 10 hours a week into your role (outside of midterm & exam weeks, when hours are minimal.) As a result, you’ll collaborate quickly with teammates (instead of waiting days for one reply) and make projects you’re proud of (instead of skimming the surface). Do note we aim to spread out the work instead of cramming 😳

Structure: We’re a small team with minimal hierarchy. You’ll ā€œreportā€ to me (Mutammim), and I’ll do my best to hear your needs and make your time in Reverie a meaningful one 🫶

AI: We deeply value the wonders of human creativity and want Reverie to embody it! As such, we don’t use generative AI to create ideas, text, images, sounds, animations, or other assets. There are reasonable exceptions (e.g. coding, design review, fact-checking, researching stores that stock an item) only to raise the bar on our work, not cut corners. Ultimately, tools are changing fast, so we stay transparent with each other on how we’re using AI-based tools.

Diversity: Through our actions, we work to make Reverie as diverse, equitable, and inclusive as it can be! We have zero tolerance for any form of discrimination on protected grounds, such as age, gender, or race.

Communication: We openly discuss our thoughts & feelings, even when we disagree, because doing so makes everything so much easier. We also try to be low ego, open to compromise, and patient.

IRL & online: We prefer to work together IRL because it’s more fun and productive! However, we are a commuter school, so most of our work happens online using Discord, Notion, and Figma.

Jennifer & I founded, and continue to lead, Reverie together! Learn a little more about us :)

Mutammim: Hi, I’m Mutammim, a third-year Computer Science student. I started Reverie because growing up, my favourite spaces were ones where people made things! And learned things! For the fun of it! And I wanted a community like that at York :) I’m so grateful to all of you who’ve participated in it. My favourite non-Reverie event I’ve hosted was Apocalypse, a zombie apocalypse-themed hackathon. When I’m not hosting events, I’m probably exploring the streets of Toronto, reading an interesting book, or trying out yet another hobby.

Jennifer: Hello everyone! I’m Jennifer, also a third-year Computer Science student and Treasurer of Reverie. In my free time, I like to draw, play video games (like HSR, ZZZ, Splatoon, or RPGs), and code, so feel free to hit me up on those topics! For Reverie related tasks, I generally produce artwork, help out with logistics, and otherwise contribute to Reverie-related events.

The application consists of basic information and two short responses (in text, audio, or video). Don’t fret about perfection, just share who you are as a person! We’d be honoured to hear from you. Thank you for your interest in making Reverie the most magical club at York.

If you have any questions, please email hi@reverie.diy or DM @reverie.diy on Instagram.
